What is Sports Rehabilitation?

Sports rehabilitation is treatment for musculoskeletal injuries new or old, helping people to reach specific goals and maintaining their health and fitness. Whether you’re recovering from an injury and you wish to get back playing your favourite sports and hobbies or you just want to get back to doing the simple day-to-day tasks, such as, walking the dog or even just getting up and down stairs, a Sports Rehabilitator can help you.

 

What can you expect?

Your first session will be an initial assessment to determine how the injury occurred – this is where your therapist will plan your goals throughout treatment, focusing on whether or not you wish to improve performance, get back to playing/training, being pain free or just improving your overall movement. All of these will be taken into consideration when your therapist is putting together your treatment plan and specific exercises, making sure you’re get exactly what you need.

 

Treatment:

Treatment will be given for the injury and the cause of the injury will also be addressed. Treatment may include; Soft tissue work, deep tissue massage, fascial release, Acupuncture, joint mobilisation, taping and electrotherapy. The therapist will decide which will be best to treat your certain injury/condition, more than one may be used.

 

Personal exercise plan:

You will then be given a personal exercise plan to follow either at home, work, gym, pool, sport specific training. These exercises are specifically designed to address the cause of your injury, and will work to improve your muscle activation, strength, flexibility, posture and lead to sport specific exercises.

 

Common areas treated:

Upper Limb: Shoulder, Elbow, Arm, Hand/Wrist

Lower Limb: Hip, Knee, Ankle/Foot

 

Common injuries treated:

Musculoskeletal injuries such as; Tendonitis, Muscle strain, Shoulder injuries, Impingement, Reduced range of movement, Anterior knee or hip pain, Shin splints, Post-op ligament repair or ligament injury, plantar fasciitis, ankle strain.
