UK Active has launched the campaign “National Fitness Day” to encourage us to get active and to find a hobby that we are passionate about!
Health centres throughout the country are getting involved, opening their doors to many and giving people an opportunity to get a taste of what’s on offer.
So many of us find it difficult to make time for ourselves, often secondary to family and work commitments. Therefore, it is important to try and fit in some extra exercise throughout the day; for example, walking to work instead of taking the car or taking the stairs instead of the escalator.
It has been medically proven that regular exercise can help reduce your chances of heart disease, diabetes, cancers, osteoarthritis and osteoporosis, just to name a few. Regular exercise is also good for your mind and soul; this has also been backed up with research showing that participation in exercise can decrease the risk of depression and dementia.
To stay healthy, adults should aim for 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise throughout the week. Moderate-intensity exercise is when you are getting out of breath but you can hold a conversation. Whereas young people (aged between 6 and 18) are encouraged to exercise – often through play – for 60 minutes every day to stay fit and healthy.
